SMITH-ENNISMORE-LAKEFIELD TOWNSHIP, Ont. — An Alberta man is due in an Ontario court today to face charges stemming from a snowmobile chase involving police.

Provincial police say officers tried to stop a snowmobile carrying an adult and a child northwest of Peterborough, Ont., because neither was wearing a helmet.

Police say the snowmobile sped off and that speeds reached more than 100 kilometres per hour, with police in Saturday’s pursuit.

The snowmobile stopped at a trailer at the Bailey’s Bay Resort and the driver fled, leaving behind the five-year-old child who was not injured.

The driver was apprehended inside a trailer after a scuffle during which he was pepper sprayed.

Scott Milton McKenzie, 25, of Fort McMurray, Alta., is charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, escape by flight, failing to stop for police, resisting arrest, driving while prohibited, driving a motorized snow vehicle without insurance and without a helmet.

Man charged after snowmobile chase: Cops

PETERBOROUGH, Ont. — An Alberta man faces several charges after leading Ontario police on a high-speed snowmobile chase Saturday while his five-year-old son rode on the back without a helmet, police say.

Snow vehicle patrol officers tried to stop a snowmobile near Bailey’s Bay on Chemong Lake, located about 160 km northeast of Toronto.

The driver and his passenger, a young child, weren’t wearing helmets, police said. The driver allegedly refused to stop, turning back to Bailey’s Bay and speeding off.

Officers followed. Police said speeds reached 100 km/h during the chase.

Police said the driver reached a trailer at Bailey’s Bay Resort, jumped off the snowmobile and abandoned the child.

An officer followed on foot, police said, wrestling with the driver on the deck and in the trailer.

The man continued to fight police until he was pepper-sprayed, police said. The child wasn’t hurt during the ordeal.

Scott Milton McKenzie, 25, is charged with dangerous driving, escape by flight, resisting arrest and two counts driving while prohibited. Under the Motorized Snow Vehicle Act, he’s charged with failing to stop for police, escape by flight, driving a snow vehicle without insurance and driving a snow vehicle without a helmet.
