Snowmobile enthusiasts from all around the north will want to head to Cochrane this weekend, as the Canadian Snowcross Racing Association (CSRA) will soon be heading our way with drivers expected to attend the Gold Cup event Feb. 25-26.

“Snowcross is today’s most popular form of snowmobile racing,” said Chantal Joanis, recreation program coordinator for the Tim Horton Event Centre. “With its high-flying aerial displays an d compact track design, competitors race around tracks that feature tight turns, banked corners and a variety of jumps allowing racers to catch ‘big air’ in full view of the spectators.”

Ms Joanis added that Cochrane will have an amazing site for both racers, who have been struggling for snow down south, and the spectators.

“The event is also a chance for people to see home-town race Dave Joanis perform,” said Ms Joanis. “Things are set to start off at 9 a.m. Saturday with events running until 4:30 p.m. As well, that evening starting at 4:30 p.m., there will be a spaghetti supper. The supper is a cancer fundraiser in honour of four-year-old Noah (Couture) Figurka. The cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children under 10.”

There will also be a dance at the Curling Club beginning at 8 p.m.

On Sunday, things will begin again at 9 a.m. with all of the practices and qualifying and the main events beginning at 1 p.m.

The cost to attend the event is $30 for a weekend pass; or day passes can be purchase at $20 for adults and $10 for seniors and children aged six to 12.

“This event would not be possible without our many volunteers,” said Ms Joanis. As well, there are so many sponsors that help: Paps Power Shop, Expedition Helicopter-Meridian Fuels, Villeneuve Construction, Roly’s Service Station, Best Western, JB Cycle and Marine/Polaris Castle, Johnson’s TV, Allan’s Home Hardware, CGV Builders, Vallieres Logging, Gerry’s Enterprises, CTV, Fortier Beverages, Canadian Tire, Girard Esso, Paul Ayotte Insurance and FedNor.
